Has it never occured to you that maybe the small car crash results are because of lax safety standards(a 3 star car being allowed into production) *coupled with* the fact that 1/2 our motor pool consists of much larger SUVs?
Put two Tahoes in a t bone type crash, two M Class vehicles or two kias, I am going to guess that if the two vehicles are of the same size, the small cars won't do so badly as you pretend, but when you run a 3 ton Navigator into a Metro-- thats where the big messes happen.
I bought the w123 for its charm mostly, but safety was a close second, economy was 3rd and longevity is an honorable mention. 25mpg isn't bad for such a sturdy car, but it could be better.
If a 30 year old rear drive car that weighs 3500 pounds(I'm guessing this is the weight of a mid-size suv these days) can get 25 miles a gallon, why can't a modern suv? The answer is not that it can't be done, obviously, it seems more that they just won't do it.
Why? Why do suvs seem to get less and less economy with every passing year whenever cars can be made to get 41mpg(with no stupid hybrid technology and no expensive diesel engine) and still have power to spare? Why do you mention having more money than others in such a matter that effects us all?
In 10 years, when the newness has gone for good, when these 17mpg tahoes have changed hands 2 or 3 times, who is going to buy them? poor people, thats who. it is not a matter of "i can afford it now-- it doesnt matter what happens later." you see, when this current motor pool is in the hands of those youre obviously above-- that is where the real fun comes in... that is when this artificial demand is going to throw a wrench into EVERYONES wallets.
It almost can't be coincidence that now, 10 years after the suv craze hit *big* and even poor folks are driving around in Suburbans, Grand Cherokees and Yukons, that oil companies are posting record profits. I am surely not a conspiracy theorist, but that seems terribly improbable that these two events coinciding could not have been just a little planned.
