RE: Old Wards article ....
Interesting story on this. I owned a Datsun King Cab way back when, one of the best vehicles I ever owned, an 84 I think, that was subject to this "US content" law. Truck ran like a top, and with the 5 speed it drove like a sports car. All of a sudden, the front fenders and the bed started to rust, and I mean RUST. Other body panels were still in excellent shape, while others were disintegrating - it was the wierdest thing. In a matter of months the truck was uninspecatable duw to the rust. So one day, we take it in the garage, pull the fenders and the bed so we can put on new ones, and on the inside of each rusted out body part was stamped "Product of the Ford Motor Company", "Made in USA". After we repaired it with "Made in Japan" parts, the truck ran forever, I eventually gave it to my dad to use on his farm in Vermont. Last I heard it was still running.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
