G-like new Wrangler

[:0]http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/pub/s...rnphotos053390

This is amazing...of course it's not a G, but it's boxy, seats five, has four doors, will be good offroad...

I wish (as do we all) that MBUSA would sell a basic G to compete with new wrangler, the 4runner, the pathfinder, and pajero. It could cost twice what a wrangler would - but shouldn't cost four times as much...

RE: G-like new Wrangler

Yeah...but it's a nice ugliness, like the Commander's. I like it, because it looks (somewhat) similar to a G. The sides, windshield, and back side are flat, and it's a real off-roader.

On one hand, we can take this imitation as flattery..on the other hand, I wish DC would realize what they're missing by offering Gs only royalty can afford.

Here in Germany Mercedes isn't marketing only to the rich. Maybe MBUSA feels they have to.

And unfortunately MBUSA would be correct (at least now)Even on this board - there are threads where MB should not sell anything smaller than the E here -

Don't know a great deal about coporate politics but since the Daimler-Benz and Chrysler merge, wouldn't a stripped down version of the G be in direct competion with the 4-door wrangler? Or does that cross car-group competetion factor in at all?

If the 4-door is offered in a Rubicon format, it seems like it would be very competent off-road. I know there is the issue of quality / reliability with Jeep. I've mainly owned Toyotas and so far haven't had to deal with that. Jeep obviously has a bad reputation but I've never owned one. Most people wouldn't consider Jeep and MB as part of the same company, although I guess technically they are.

No different in the US. How would they be able to compete in the largest segment, (their bread and butter) if they only marketed and sold their upper end models? Can you say C and E Class. For the past ten years MBUSA has used the slogan, 'Now anyone can drive a MB.'

Typically we in the US like everything big and loaded with options. As mentioned before, apparently there hasn't been a strong demmand for basic or stripped MB anything. Even our so called 'basic' C Class cars come fairly well equipped. Unlike the European market 99% of our cars are pre-ordered by the individual dealer in the most desirable colors and equipment, (almost every option available). MBUSA and their dealers are only answering the demands of their customers. Should the demand be great enough to market distribute a basic or utilitarian G then I assume they will do so. But for now it appears that the US G buyer only wants the top of the line. In the MY05 one out of every three Gs sold in the US was a G55K!

84 280GE (Sold)
85 280GE (Sold)
86 280GE (Sold)
98 G320 (Sold)
00 BRABUS G500 (Sold)
05 G55GE (Sold)

RE: G-like new Wrangler

This thread started in the G-forum.

It's raining here and it's going to keep raining... but I like the rain.

The reason Gs are ordered with all the options is because they start at $80K. If they cost less, then it could be marketed to a different group of people.
