ABC store bans gossip

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A couple of chatty employees have earned a blanket ban on wagging tongues for all 64 people who work at Cumberland County's ABC stores.
Gene Webb, general manager of the county Alcoholic Beverage Control system, issued an order in February that bans gossip and threatens to fire anyone who spreads rumors on the job.
He declined to be specific about what prompted the rule.
"It's really a problem with one or two employees," he said Tuesday.
Employees were required to sign a statement outlining the rule.
"Take care of the business in your individual store; do not try to get involved in the business of another store or employee," it said. "If you get a call from someone about something happening in another store, ask that person if the information has something to do with you _ if not, you are not interested."
Officials at other local government offices said they have policies to discourage inappropriate or unprofessional behavior in the work place, but none specifically bans gossiping.
"I'm just not sure how you would practically go about enforcing something like that," said Doug Hewett, a spokesman for the city of Fayetteville.
Webb said he expects the rule will, in the long run, boost morale and productivity. He said though no one has been disciplined for violating the policy, it's already reduced gossip.
Still, ABC board member Lula Crenshaw said it may be unnecessary.
"It's the nature of the beast," she said. "People are going to talk."
