Botnst: You sisters argument makes good sense to me - I wonder how the 'argument against' can stack up?.
Until talking to my sister, I was in favor of guest worker status. She argued that my position is akin to indenture except it has no end. That hurt.

This was my position before being convinced otherwise.

1. A guest worker program will allow the USA to know who who is in the country while illegals will never say.

2. Guest workers receive the benefit of better wages and working conditions than from their home country.

3. Most alien workers send some portion of their income back to relatives in their country of origin thereby increasing the wealth of the folks back home, putting pressure on the home nation to improve.

4. Guest workers will hold domestic labor costs down which will hold mfr prices down which will allow us to maintain or more readily increase our std of living.

"Guest worker" is just a nice way of saying "nigger".

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Whoa.

But the point is taken.

It's a throw-away person we needn't concern ourselves with.

But so is an "illegal alien." The guest program only doesn't work when the guests don't leave. We used to have that at our house, and, as it was said back then, "guests and fish begin to stink after 3 days."

Unfortunately economic needs are often much more compelling than a call to develop a well vetted and tested social experiment. Jim

"guests and fish begin to stink after 3 days."

What a great line - and oh so true! [:)] [:(].
