The big news

A big news this days has been the fact that Katie Couric has/will move from a morning show to read the news in the afternoon, who ever is hiring her hopes to raise the ratings and she is going to be paid 15 millions per year.

Nothing personal against her, in fact I would like that juicy job too, but seriously, from those behind the scene to the dumbdience, is that what it takes to make better news? I thought it was the factual and intellectual content! not the artist or celebrity reading a sheet of paper in front of the TV camera.

I am willing to bet that in those 30 minutes if we do away with the imagery and field reporting and commercials time and the rest of the trivia all is left is about two pages (maybe) worth of typed news, reading those few sentences is really worth 15 mill?

Maybe the facial expressions and acting and correct intonation to dramatize what is being read, the blind miss a lot in the news.

RE: The big news

She was a reporter for fifteen years before she became a perky little pundit. She made her bones in journalism a long time ago, and deserves the job.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
