Well looks like those living in Taxachusetts have lost a little more of their freedom. After a bill was passed you will no longer be able to chose not to have health insurance. If the state deems you can afford it and you elect not to purchase it they will fine you up to $1k per year.
They are crzy if they think the universal health bill they just passed will only cost $1 billion a year.
"Choose not to have health insurance". I've been laughing all morning over that one. Man, there is spin, and there is spin! My good, all those poor people losing their right to choose not to have health insurance! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA HHAHAHAHHHHAHAHHAAHHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAHAAHAHHAHHAHAHHA HAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
The taxing of individuals that can afford insurance but 'choose' not to is aimed at offsetting the cost incurred by the state when these same individuals 'choose' to take themselves to the emergency room when they get sick and then 'choose' not to pay the bill.
The point is for health coverage to be affordable for all. You can argue that people who make less money shouldn't be able to have the same things as those who make more, but I don't think health care should be included in that argument.
First let me say that I know number of people who chose not to have health insurance. These are people that make $80k - $180k+. They feel they never get sick so don't want to pay for health insurance.
When the people I am describing go to the emergency room and are seen they are billed for the amount. Not a discounted rate that insurance companies get but at a jacked up rate. Don't want to pay? Fine but it is going to get ugly very quickly for you.
Now lets take one of these 'working poor' families that 'can't afford' health insurance (but can afford brand new Nike's, Cable TV, cars, etc.) that everyone likes to site. Something happens to them and they go to the emergency room. They are not turned away. In fact it would be illegal for the hospital to not treat them. They are seen and receive the same care as everyone else. They then receive a bill they "can't afford." What are these poor people to do? They contact the hospital which then works with them. The fees are reduced and they are put on a $25-$50 a month payment plan. Sure it may take them 3,000 years to pay off the bill at that rate but everyone is going through the motions so everyone is happy.
So let me get this straight - the millions of Americans with no health insurance are either filty rich and stupid, because you got to be stupid not to buy health insurance no matter how much money you have, or they are Nike-wearing ghetto trash. Tell me, are any of these people conspiring against you? Have you been receiving messages from your home planet, telling you to kill them? Please, please, visit this web site!

So everything is black and white huh?
Of course it is not that everyone without health insurance is rich or ghetto trash. My point is that there are a number of people who are without health insurance that can afford it. You can call these people stupid if you want but it is their choice to be without health insurance whether we agree with it or not.
If you are going to start forcing pepole to have insurance or start a new entitlement program around it how about we start with common sense. You smoke you pay more and no coverage for smoking related illnesses. You are grossly overweight no knee, hip, etc. replacement until you lose weight and you pay more for insruance.
