I think we are conflating ideas here.

If we went to a total sales tax (which I hereby decree is renamed a "Transaction Tax"), then every stock purchase would be treated exactly the same as any other purchase. Those who like regressive taxes could argue in favor of a sliding scale and those who like a fixed rate could argue for that.

The point being that every transaction involving exchanges of value could be taxed. On average, I would guess that rich folks have more transactions and larger transactions than poor folks, in which case they would pay a greater proportion of taxes.

The other argument that I presented above is giving everybody $10K per year and taxing everybody at a flat rate.

These are two ideas that folks have proposed and there are many others. What I would like to see is a completely new way of accumulating money to run the government. I think everybody would agree that the current method is all f**ked-up.

If it is a method that nobody likes, why do we keep doing it?

The solution to the tax problem has always been obvious - tax the rich, feed the poor.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Was going to say the same thing myself.

Although I will go on to say I have no issues helping people who try and help themselves. But no direct cash payments and no work no help. If you are not trying to help yourself you deverve to rot in the gutter.

The best way to make the tax system better is to have no income tax and a high rate of GST/VAT. Thus its a tax on consumption. Which means that as people earn more they spend more and as a result are taxed more, should also help inflation and enlarge household savings.

So you mean to tell me that people who make a lot of money should be required to pay for those who don't? How fair is that? Screw the poor.
