RE: Abu Dhabi New Corniche

yalls towns are so big an fancy.

last summer was the first time i had ever been in a tall building(55 floors) an i hadda sit down cuz i was all dizzy.

it was an older masonry building, not steel and glass.

do steel buildings flex more than stone ones? is it perceptible?

This signature removed to protect the innocent.

If you go to the top of the Sears tower it doesn't flex, it SWAYYYYYYYYYS[:0]. Very weird. Years ago I had a friend who lived in the Hancock building. We used to all sit around, smoke weed, and watch Bullwinkle. The wind howls very loudly through the steel girders and it takes a while to get used to.

yes they do and yes it is. For example, on upper floors of WTC, workers were able to feel the sway that could be as big as 3 feet in every direction. I had couple friends who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald who'd tell me about pencils and items placed near the edge of the desk fall off on days with high winds. They'd feel like they're on boats.
Masonry buildings, on the other hand, rely solely upon compressive strength of the material, therefore, there is hardly any flex; in fact, a flex would lead to catastrophic structural failure (think of stacking up wooden blocks high to a point it begins to sway and how long it would last in that state).

It's changed a lot - well everything in the UAE does.
T
Singapore is similar in a way that 6 months can be enough to transform a cityscape, coastline, or a neighborhood. In fact, I probably won't recognize much there since I have last visited the Island in 1990.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is a small island in the Arabian Gulf. It's famous for its lovely corniche road which has been under renovation for a couple of years now. Work included obtaining a vast area from the sea to turn it into green parks and the 'current' corniche road. I found these pictures (which are almost a year old). I thought some may find them interesting.
Very interesting. I checked it out via Google Earth. Looks like another large reclamation further out is underway that may render the current Cornische into yet another inland road if they decide to close off the lagoon.
Is Dubai the commercial center and the largest city in UAE? It seems like all planes heading to UAE seem to be destined for Dubai as opposed to Abu Dhabi.

RE: Abu Dhabi New Corniche

You know, if roads are your thing, you really should come to Houston. We got roads that will bitch slap those pussy beach roads any day.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
