RE: Mercy please ... wireless question
Firewall, virus protection keeps others from actually accessing your computer's hard drive or other local resources. It has no effect of what you are putting up in the air. The Internet works off of "packets", which you can visualize as like a letter envelope. When you start transmitting, its just like throwing one envelope after another into the air for your receiver to catch. It's easy for someone to intercept the packets after they have left your computer and before your receiver gets it, read what is in them, and then pass it to your receiver as if he had never intercepted them so you don't even know what is happening. The hacker is looking for the envelopes that contain your Social Security, credit card numbers, and your personal emails. A big open network that you jump on is prime beef for the hacker, a juicy target indeed.
Secured networks work by putting a lock on the packet. You have half the key, and your receiver has the other half. If someone intercepts it, the envelop contains gibberish if he only has half the key.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
