On-Time: A **VERY** Disturbing Idea

To me this almost makes the Patriot Act seem tame.

One of those ideas where technology is definitely NOT our friend.

Anyway the idea is to cause people to make their car payments on time. I suppose penalties, additional interest and ultimate repossession aren't sufficient threats.

And yes, it's already here, not just theoretical. Go read the article (link below) if you want more details.

How On Time works

1 The customer makes a car payment and receives a six-digit code.

2 The customer punches in the code on this keypad, which is attached to the car's starter.

3 The car operates until the next payment is due.

4 If the next payment is not made on time, the device won't be reprogrammed, preventing the car from starting.

Hmmmm. Very interesting. Had not heard of this before. The question is does it become an enabler or is it abused. What I mean by that is does this open up credit for auto loans some people would not have available to them otherwise. Or does it become abused in one manner or another. The technology in and of itself is not disturbing. The implementation of that technology may be disturbing.

RE: On-Time: A **VERY** Disturbing Idea

they wonder why the middle of the street average joe is lashing out wildly at every person who isnt exactly like him, huh?

maybe its because he and his family have to worry about shit like this. the rich dont... the poor dont, just the HUGE middle group that makes up the biggest portion.

thats scary shit, mr greg.

one more reason for me to smile when i look at that dented, rusting recycled kraut can sitting in the driveway waiting for his monthly allotment of "genuine mercedes-benz replacement parts", huh?

*edit*

why dont they make one for the refrigerator or light switches too? maybe the coffee pot and the oven door.

you know.. just to make sure you can still afford the electricity overnight-- they may need to run a credit check and have a credit card number on file-- just in case, though.

I think it's great.

More people need to be scared into paying cash, saving and not buying things they can't afford.

Pay-as you-go is not exactly a new concept. Some folks prefer the discipline of such schemes.I guess you don't own something until it's paid for,so until such time, one way or another you are obligated to the seller.

Yup -- don't buy the stash if you can't slap the cash...

Yeah, a written and signed contract, not what is equivalent to an electronic ankle bracelet.
