RE: Should cell phone use be illegal while driving?
I guess we should define what a good driver is?
I define a good driver as someone who drives at a safe and reasonable speed without cutting in and out of traffic, being able to drive smoothly and safely. A good driver is one who is paying attention to the road and not doing anything else but driving.
So under my definition of a good driver if you are doing something else besides driving when moving then you are not paying attention and not being a good driver. i am not saying you cant change the radio station just change them when you are stopped at a light. I think the most shocking thing when i learned how to drive was going to racing school. one of our activities was to learn how much ground a car covers in a second, the amount of distance covered in 1 second at speeds above 25mph is tremendous.. So i have made some stats for you.
At 25 mph you are going about 36 feet a second.
At 30 mph you are going about 43 feet a second
At 45 mph you are going about 66 feet a second
At 55 mph you are going about 80 feet a second
at 65 mph you are going about 95 feet a second
Most of us drive about 75 mph on the freeway or about 110 feet a second.
Looking at the radio distracts a driver for about 2-3 seconds and at 75 mph that is 220 feet-330 feet that you have covered without paying attention. From 75 mph its going to take on average for mercedes about 140 feet to stop. The time it takes you to process from gas to full brake is going to take a second so in that second you have eaten up about 110 feet so its going to take you about 250 feet to stop from 75mph. since the 140 feet stopping distance is performed by someone who is stopping at a set point and knows when he has to slam on the brakes so he has almost no gas-brake reaction time.
just something to think about.
