RE: Best book you've read recently
A wild & wonderful - and long - novel by William T. Vollman called Europe Central: it parallels the Hitler & Stalin regimes with interconnected vignettes of real people from Shostakovich to Paulus to Kurt Gerstein to an East German judge called the "Red Guillotine." For something a little easier going, try John Berendt's The City of Falling Angels, a fantastic look at Venice by the author of Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.
"Someday you will die somehow and something's gonna steal your carbon."
