New Orleans

Just watched a short documentary about New Orleans on todays day. A Dutch engineer/dam builder commented that the walls keeping the water out of the city are simply pathetic. He couldn't understand how someone with a little knowledge of water would build a dam like that. The wall is too thin, and isn't supported enough for it's height, it just hinged like door when the water rushed against it.
Comments/completions?

RE: New Orleans

Why not build on stilts, it's gonna happen again.

Or plan the city on the lines of a 21st century Venice where boats are the prime movers of the population and the problems of rising sea levels and storm surges are anticipated and allowed for.

There's a number of solutions to the problem, but alas, it's unlikely that any elected government in the U.S. will be willing to commit to spending the necessary dollars for anything other than temporary (anything less than 30 years) measures.

RE: New Orleans

It's been shown that the Army Corps of Engineers already knew about this before Katrina. Having said that, there's plenty of blame to go around between the Mayor (who will be replaced soon enough), current Gov, and all recent past Mayors and Govs who were aware of the problem and chose to do nothing. The sad state of affairs should have been improved long ago. And then, there's FEMA...

2002 Ccoupe, not as good as others, apparently

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060301/ap_on_go_pr_wh/katrina_video

It would appear some in our government don't listen to anyone with ideas or concepts or news they don't want to hear, and then, lie to the public with statements like "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" after the fact, when, in fact the breach of the levees was discussed, and is on tape, with the liar, our President.

How about not rebuilding the damn thing? Or at least not rebuilding in its current location.
