Quick Question

The general consensus is that American kids are getting dumber.
How is it then that my high school sophomore kid’s book-bag weighs slightly more than a pygmy pony? I just saw a pile of his books on the kitchen table and I can truly say that it would rival the Jefferson Library. I’m trying to think back on my high school years but alas, I was too wasted to form a coherent memory.
I think the likes of MTV and rap music is jading our opinion of young 'uns in this country and for the most part, education is at its pinnacle. Thoughts?

RE: Quick Question

^^^^

That's a quick question??

Well, what I have seen from my kids seems to reflect more a change of teaching and examining methods compared to my experience.
I was just discussing a few days ago how much 'A' levels have changed (Uni entrance requirement exams). In my day, most subjects had three exams, each of three hours duration.Essay writing style and presentation obviously were important, even in subjects like Biology. In addition to the scientific theory, the ability to put it into plain English was also necessary.
Currently,40% of final marks can be obtained from continually assessed coursework and the longest exams are ninety minutes.

Now I'm not sure whether in overall terms this shift is a good or bad thing, but suffice it to say that the media are constantly reporting that students are so poor at the three 'R's that universities are having to provide remedial classes for the basics.

A stack of Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler magazines is a lot heavier then one might think...

As long as they aren't copies of Trenchcoat Mafia Quarterly and Mein Kampf, I'm ok with that.

RE: Quick Question

TV and media is getting dumber. The controlling 1% (who own the media outlets) are trying to make sure their fortune is never threatened. They are doing a mighty fine job too!

Also it could just be there is more populace coming online (so to speak) that it will slightly bring the good/bad ratio down for awhile until they catch up.

The money is where the masses are!

First I threaten a law suite. I talk with the principal and explained my concern over developing future back problems. The school has most text on CD, not all. she only brings home a couple of books now. fair enough.

RE: Quick Question

I'm pleased when my kids have to carry and read real books. Both activities are good for them.Presumably where heavy books are concerned, the kids have a locker at school with which to organise those they need to carry at any given time?

That was my first thought, Lockers!!! As it turns out the school has a locker shortage and she has to share with two other people. big hassle, especally when things start missing. Not a bad school just rapidly growing.
