Any computer wizards?

I know I'm going to regret posting this here, but.....

I am trying to set up my wireless home network.

I have got my desktop and laptop to connect to each other through the wireless connection with a good connection and signal strength.

My desktop has the ADSL internet connection.

How do I get the laptop to access the internet over the wireless connection?

Cheers

Ross

RE: Any computer wizards?

You got to set your desktop with some routing functions if yo9u want it to be a point of access.
Did you set them as peer to peer?

RE: Any computer wizards?

Thanks Shabah, yes they are peer to peer.

What routing functions do I need to turn on?

OK, make your desktop act like an access point.

RE: Any computer wizards?

Sorry for sounding stupid, but where do I set that up, ie turn on the 'access point'?

make sure to change your default password from either "password" or "admin" to something else. That is the first thing i look for if someone has a "secure" wi-fi cuse i can log in and without any work it just gives me the wep key. And usally if i cant guess the admin password i am to lazy to wait 30mins for the dam wep key cracking scripts to run.

RE: Any computer wizards?

Here is a link on how to make an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) with your topology: http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/windows98ics/g/bldef_ics.htm

"Ad Hoc Mode With Windows ICS
Alternatively, you can try Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) or equivalent software that relies on one computer hosting the Net connection. This option requires at a minimum that the host computer have a modem (either internal or external), and that all wireless network cards be configured for ad hoc (peer-to-peer) mode. This option works best if you only have a few home computers located close to each other.

Those who prefer the first option usually already own a wired broadband router that supports external modems. Because the second option requires neither a wired router nor an external modem, it is usually cheaper and easier to set up for those building new home networks from the ground up. " from: http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless/f/wlansharedialup.htm

In your case you are using the second described option...

What's the OS on your desktop?
