I don't really care about the UN. It is a corrupt and hypocritical body. I have stated that I thought it a mistake to go to them in the first place. They should gently be ignored.
This would be another funamental difference in thinking between us. The United States is part of the UN, we did use the UN to authorize sanctions, and impose a weapons inspection program on Iraq, and then, when it did not serve our interests (which apparently were not well enough articulated that your list of reasons were never brought up to debate in Congress) to abide by the UN rulings suggesting there was insufficient evidence in the opinion of the UN that an invasion of Iraq was warranted to enforce the UN sanctions and other pronouncements, we, much like Saddam, decided to just ignore them.

Overall it is just not sending the right message. America spent two hundred years building an image by our actions that established us as a beacon of humanitarian fairness and respect for the other ways of living humans have adopted in different parts of the world. Your attitude is eroding this two century long effort with actions that make us appear to hold our interests above those of the rest of the world community. In this particular episode, all the evidence of the UN inspectors supported the UN conclusion that Saddam did not have the WMD we said he did. The net result has been we have been reduced to liars, like we accused Saddam of being, or at the very least, the biggest and dumbest military force on earth. It is the wrong message. Jim

Wrong message?
Tell me about the UN's action in Rwanda, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, etc. The UN isn't anything more than "a message".

Chiphomme,

"The wrong message" is a phrase I borrowed from Bush. I am glad to see you find it as offensive as I do when it is used to justify an action you don't agree with, however, in this case your complaints about the UN are far from the issue at hand. This thread topic is focused on the United States invasion of Iraq for the reasons stated by our President - giant, Guiness Book of Records Folly, or not?

There are many ways of measuring this. One would be that no single reason cited for the action has borne out to be true. Another would be to just look at how badly we have managed the events after the invasion. Another would be to measure the cost in terms of life and treasure.

Support for imposing our way of life forcefully is not strong in the US or for the US to do so abroad. Jim

"...justify an action I don't agree with.." isn't what I meant.
I meant the UN isn't about "action" it's about "message" (ie all bark and no bite).
The US should have known better than to have gone to that place and expected support for "action".

Chip,
Here is some assessment from the professional. Not trying to change your mind, just to show what it would be like if we keep going down the same rat hole.

Take it for what it is worth.

Yeah. Me too. I would have a beer with GW, and I think he is an interesting guy. I just don't trust his policies, nor would I with Hitler, Saddam, Mao, Castro, Stalin........
