Why can't people just disagree?

Honestly -- I just shake my head as I'm perusing some of these threads. What is it that makes certain individuals heap abuse on folks with an opposing viewpoint and avoid legitimate points that counter their own?

From my perspective, if you avoid a direct and pertinent question, you've lost the debate. Likewise, if you don't avoid a direct and pertinent question but feel obligated to slander the originator of that question, you've also lost the debate. Just my opinion, but if you can't keep it real, you can't bring home the gold...

In internet discussions, the focus tends to be more on 'winning' rather than a search for the truth. And once that rot starts, it cannot easily be stopped, but the solution is, as usual, the golden rule. I sometimes stoop to abuse, I admit, but only when my patience wears out with particularly tiresome and repeated examples of disrespect for other persons points of view. Case in point today I guess.

It's a much tougher challenge to not abuse in response to abuse. Once the glove is thrown down, all bets are off as far as I'm concerned.

Although not always the case, simple abuse often reflects a lack of the intellect required to argue constructively. This occurring irrespective to any claim to an education.Seems the old saying "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" is becoming increasingly relevant in these 'politically correct' times.[V]
