Israel halts "tax payments" to Palestinians

Few Americans know that Israel collects taxes from its subjugated Palestinian population, and then, when the mood suits, actually dispenses some of the tax money to the Palestinian authority. The mood doesn't suit them again..

Olmert halts transfer of funds to Palestinian Authority
Chris McGreal

Jerusalem: Israel on Sunday froze contacts with what it called the "terrorist" Palestinian Authority, and put a block on the transfer of funds, the day after the swearing in of a Hamas-dominated Parliament.

"Israel views the rise of Hamas as a dangerous milestone that turns the Palestinian Authority into a terrorist authority,'' said the acting Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert. ``Israel will not hold contacts with the administration in which Hamas plays any part — small, large or permanent.''

The Cabinet decided to halt the transfer of funds, mostly about $50 million a month in tax and customs receipts, to the Authority and to appeal to foreign Governments to do the same until Hamas renounces violence and recognises Israel's right to exist.

Of course, Israel is under no such injunction, either to renounce violence or recognize Palestine's right to exist. Such is privilege...

That's exactly what Israel wants them to do to show the world how those Arabs are animals

How about Hamas taking a couple of steps in the right direction, e.g. recognizing Israel, Recognizing Israel's right to exist, cracking down on Terrorism.

How about Israel recongnizing the Palestinians right for self determination, existance and above all dignity? I am not saying that Hamas is an angel, as matter of fact I know that they have a criminal element and are simply an Iranian pion. Hamas has come to power because of the lack of interest in real peace by the Israelis and the US, it's that simple. The Palestinians would not have voted for them if Fatah's dick has not been made so flacid...
Hamas is a mistake, an Israeli mistake that will cost Isrealis and Palestinians for a long time.

Edit: read this interview by NPR to get an Idea who Hamas is:
http://www.npr.org/programs/totn/transcripts/2004/mar/040322.khalidi.html

"Prof. KHALIDI: Well, as Dr. Ranstorp says, Hamas grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood which, in the Gaza Strip, was not only quietist; most Palestinians would say was collaborationist, was--became a tool of the Israeli occupation against the nationalist movement there, against the PLO. Muslim Brotherhood thugs beat up PLO leaders in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In fact, they were taken from the Gaza Strip across Israel to the West Bank to do this--could only have done so with the connivance of the Israeli security authorities. And it was against this perceived collaborationism with the occupation that Hamas was founded. It was a revolt against the quietist collaborationist philosophy that the Muslim Brotherhood had been following up to that point."

If you read between the lines you will pick up who actually encouraged Hamas to be a player to offset Fatah...

Classic misinformation. It's the Palestinians' money; the Israelis are stealing it from them.

Kinda like what they did with the land, ya know.

So if what you say is true, that means it would be a good idea for them to give money to people who want them dead.

Damned Elders of Zion, anyway.

It's not about "what I say"... no one, not even the Israelis, denies that this is the Palestinians' own money. Or maybe you're denying it now? You can finally be a pioneer for once, instead of just regurgitating right-wing agitprop.

Why hasn't Israel been required to renounce the use of violence and recognize Palestine's right to exist?
