U.S. & Israel Plan to Depose Elected Palestinian Gov't

Remember, the U.S. promotes 'Democracy' and 'Free Elections' only when it likes the results

U.S. and Israelis Are Said to Talk of Hamas Ouster
By STEVEN ERLANGER (NYT)

JERUSALEM, Feb. 13 — The United States and Israel are discussing ways to destabilize the Palestinian government so that newly elected Hamas officials will fail and elections will be called again, according to Israeli officials and Western diplomats.

The intention is to starve the Palestinian Authority of money and international connections to the point where, some months from now, its president, Mahmoud Abbas, is compelled to call a new election. The hope is that Palestinians will be so unhappy with life under Hamas that they will return to office a reformed and chastened Fatah movement.

The palastineins are free to elect who they want.

We are free not to support a terrorist organization.

RE: U.S. & Israel Plan to Depose Elected Palestinian Gov't

These are certianly not the type of people I want my tax dollars supporting.

Hamas politburo head Khaled Mashaal says: Our mission is to liberate Jerusalem, purify the Aqsa Mosque
February 14, 2006, 1:08 PM (GMT+02:00)
Addressing a pro-Hamas rally in Khartoum, Sudan, Mashaal referred to Western threats to cut off aid: "God, the Islamic nation are with us, will lead us to victory and liberation. Do not fear poverty." He thanked Sudanese parties for raising funds for the Hamas-ruled Palestinian Authority government.

Hamas leader Mahmoud a-Zahar declares Palestinian war on Israel will go on
February 14, 2006, 2:11 PM (GMT+02:00)
Spelling out the incoming Palestinian government’s agenda, a-Zahar said: We will not recognize Israel; our armed struggle will go on until all of Palestine is “liberated; we will abrogate the Oslo accords and all the agreements the PLO and the Palestinian Authority signed; all negotiations with Israel must go through a third party; we don’t need money from Israel or “the Satan; Arab nations will give us money; we have long-range missiles.
DEBKAfile: Mahmoud a-Zahar, who is terminally ill with cancer, in effect handed down his political-military testament.

RE: U.S. & Israel Plan to Depose Elected Palestinian Gov't

From that same article: "The United States and the European Union in particular want any failure of Hamas in leadership to be judged as Hamas's failure, not one caused by Israel and the West." Does that sound familiar?

In reality it does not matter if Hamas or Fatah is in power, they will all be undermined. The bottom line Israel wants to see any Arab leadership fail to justify their argument that they are incapable of self government and that they should give up and return to the days when Israel had total control. The US government is probably pushing for that as well because it does not serve its interests to have a freely elected Arab entity that can eventually express itself without pressure and make economical decision that will shunt Israel or the US from the Middle East oil trade.
I will wager that even if a party that had no terrorism ties had won it would have not been enough in the eyes of the all mighty powers unless they totally subjugated to the will of Israel and the US.

Hamas knows this as well and they are not fooling themselves as to what possible outcome this is going to yield. They are banking on Arab states to fill in the gape in financial aid and to share any outrage if the US and Israel do carry through their plans of sabotage. Personally I think that most Arab states will look the other way while we will be witnessing sieges like what happened to Arafat to bring down the Palestinian government. In the end I strongly believe that Israel will either prevail and expand its reach in the Middle East or it will just contribute to a total breakdown through a large scale war which will make the religious right have some mega boners…

Shabah, why do you think Arab states will look the other way? Surely KSA could replace the US/EU funding from some loose change down the back of the sofa?

You would think that KSA would do that but they are the worst double faced government there is...
Just swap the K for U and you get the picture. Here is my beef:
KSA funds individual families that sent their kids to kill people while strapping bombs, That’s fucked up!
KSA never intervened when Arafat was under siege; right or wrong Arafat was the legitimate representative of his people then but all he got is lip service and was undermined by KSA that funded Islamo fashists in Palestine.
If KSA was so concerned they should have built some real streams of funds for the Palestinians to build infrastructure and develop an educational system rather than encourage hoodlumhood.
The people of KSA on the other hand in general are not to blame just like the people of the US or EU, it's the junta jjl that is the problem...

Thanks Shabah. If you are right in your analysis then that is, as you say, pretty fucked up and cynical. But at some point this situation will have to be fixed by removing the fear and loathing felt by the Palestinians & Israelis, Arabs and Jews, on the human level, person to person, for each other. A tall order, but that is the answer in the longer term. Fixing the corruption that has kept the Palestinian Arabs poor, funding some real industry and wealth creation with help from the rest of the Arab world (keeps the west out of it) and developing some independence from Israel would be great - independence and self-respect. Perhaps if KSA will not help, other countries will.

Yes to the analysis and remediation. No to the political reality of the various players, all cynically abusing their respective constituencies and their respective enemies.
