RE: A 'dangerous moment' for Europe and Islam
It's easy to loose sight of the fact that storms like this have been hitting this particular coast since the last ice age. I think that fact and the physiognomy of the landscape (absent humans) lend credence to that theory. The most recent analysis that i saw of recent history (a pretty stout record for 150 years, spotty for 150-300, piss-poor beyond), is that we are possibly about to return to 'normal' storm frequency that we haven't seen in the Gulf for 70 years or so. Storm freq should remain more or less constant but storm intensity will increase. This greater intensity may last for over 100 years.
The political tragedy is that nobody has the balls to say we should abandon the area with 20 miles of the coast. One Republican (Speaker of the House Denny Hastert,a powerful man) suggested as much concerning New Orleans and much of the nearby coast.
He was blasted into silence by Democrats and then Bush got all weepy and promised to spend wataever is necessary (a trillion bucks) to protect us all from God's watery wrath and indignation over that sinful hellhole of nekkid jiggly breasts and sodomites gone wild.
