Social importances of Hunting

On my lunch break today there was a great discussion on NPR's Talk of the Nation about the state of hunting in the country, especially how the numbers of hunters are declining in this country.
Hunting was never a part of my youth but it is something that I plan on doing this next year.
According to the National Safety Council, there were 530,000 animal-related accidents in 2003 and these collisions resulted in 100 deaths and 10,000 injuries.
Anybody here hunt? Prefered methods?

Did you know that over 50,000 americans die in auto accidents related to deer every year.
Pretty remarkable, since that's more people than die in auto accidents of all types combined..

RE: Social importances of Hunting

I used to deer hunt a lot, been deer hunting since I was 12 when I killed my first on with a .30/30 at about 40 yds with a neck shot. I quit deer hunting about 15 years ago because of the freaking idiots who have no clue what they're doing in teh woods and use a freaking .300 Win mag and 6x scope when you rarely see a deer (in N LA) more that 50 yds away. There are people who have more money then sense or time.

I still enjoy squirrel hunting with a .22.

If you're going to take-up hunting, for god's sake, join a hunting club with some savvy members that you can trust. The life you save maybe mine.

Not a hunter never been don't have a desire to go sit in the woods waiting for an animal to come by.

But hunting is very important to control animal populations.

RE: Social importances of Hunting

I haven't been hunting in a long time. The last time I hunted I paid some guy in Louisiana a lot of money to hunt some homeless guy with a military background. We had two motorcycles chasing the guy through those funky cemetaries. We chased him in SUV's. The goal was to get him before he got to the water. I heard they were put out of business by some guy with a mullet.
