Exxon Mobil Posts Largest Profit in History

Largest profit by anyone, ever. Life is very, very good if you're a U.S. oil company...

Exxon Mobil Posts Largest Annual Profit for U.S. Company
By SIMON ROMERO and JOHN HOLUSHA (NYT)

HOUSTON, Jan. 30 — Exxon Mobil, the nation's largest energy company, today reported a 27 percent surge in profits for the fourth quarter as elevated fuel prices gave rise to the most lucrative year ever for an American company, with profits in 2005 reaching $36.13 billion and revenue $371 billion.

Exxon's profits are expected to generate new scrutiny of the company's operations in Washington, where legislators have recently expressed concern over Big Oil's good fortune as soaring oil and natural gas prices pressure consumers. Exxon said its profits climbed more than 40 percent last year, while its tax bill rose only 14 percent...

Exxon's revenue last year allowed it to surpass Wal-Mart as the largest company in the United States, and by some measures Exxon became richer than some of world's largest oil-producing nations. For instance, its revenue of $371 billion surpassed the gross domestic product of $245 billion for Indonesia, an OPEC member and the world's fourth most populous country with 242 million people.

I predict it will not be long before the socialists on this board recommend taking some amount of that profit as "excessive"--as if the company is run for the public benefit.

We need to punish these evil corporations. How dare they take risks, employ people, give to the politicians campaigns, and pay taxes. Clearly the gov't is much more worthy of the money they are making. Only the gov't can spend it responsibly and not waste it. I say we just have the gov't take over the oil companies. That was we won't have to bother with congressional hearings on why oil companies made record profits.

I love this. Nice to see someone stand up to congress and their publicity stunts.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Officials from six major oil companies have refused to testify this week at a Senate hearing looking into whether oil industry mergers in recent years have made gasoline more expensive at the pump.

This government currently operates at the worst deficit in history, while corporations are posting profits like this and now pay little in taxes. I think I would call this "stealing".

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Look at the current O&G depletion tax law - I wouldn't call it "stealing", but more like "gov't sponsored financial management". And with the current state of affairs, it's not going to get any harsher for the gas companies.

The non-"socialists" really have no problem with collusion? That's very generous of you.

Congress and the administration are stealing our tax dollars and giving them to the oil industry. Simple corporate welfare.
