RE: Hamas Wins Big in Palestine

Listen...

About 4.3 million people went to the polls in a free and open election and the majority of the votes in their parlementary system went to Hamas. That's democracy! I don't get you guys sometimes. We want democracy in the middle east and that's exactly what we've got! What more do you want?

Not all of us think that democracy in the mideast is a good thing. The more democratic elections over there the more anti US regimes will be in power.

Not sure why everyone is trying to act surprised & shocked over the outcome. It was not a difficult call to tell how the election would go.

Is it that difficult to grasp? Electing a group sworn to the destruction of Israel is hardly a step in the right direction.
Not necessarily - elected power has the tendency to soften extremism - at least over time (Sinn Fein)

Now -the key will be if they absolve any future elections & radicalise whatever political constitution they have ...

Yes, a rational long-view. I agree, this could legitimize and empower Palestine. There are always risks associated with democratic elections, and this one could go either way. And that's why Bush is afraid of legitimate elections. ;)

The people Have Spoken, Now Ignore them

I think Abbas must listen to this message:
Bush to Abbas: The people Have Spoken, Now Ignore them
Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Thursday the Palestinian election in which the militant group Hamas swept to a shock victory were a sign Palestinians were unhappy with the status quo but urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to remain in power.

He said the election showed democracy at work, which was positive for the Middle East region. "What was also positive is that it was a wake up call to the leadership, obviously people were not happy with the status quo," Bush told a White House news conference.
Here you go; our president has the solution.

I meant that what the President said was knuckleheaded, not what Gmisbest. said. This time.
