RE: Hatch: The Survivor/Tax Evader

There's one thing about Hatch. He's a complete unadulterated dumbass if he thought someone else was going to pay his taxes for him!

I have had a gripe about them for a long time. Lets try and reduce spending. The best way to that is create an equitable tax system, flat tax above the poverty line. You want to hear the electorate scream about spending force the the bulk of the population to actually pay for the out of control federal government. Right now the mantra is: Soak the rich.
"Equitable" is in the eye of the beholder. If you're rich, your effective rate should be much lower than advertised, unless you're dumb rich, and then you have no excuse.

The first 80% of voters pay less than 20% of federal income tax. Why do you think there's no real sqwaking when spending is out of control?

RE: Hatch: The Survivor/Tax Evader

Because, when it comes down to it, people these days vote less with their pocketbooks and more with their pet projects, be it Iraq, abortion, gay marriage (look at the numbers on how that swayed people - beyond silly), etc. Do you remember anyone really discussing cutting spending in the elections? I don't - and I can't imagine any politician taking on trimming the size of gov't without being chopped off at the knees. IMHO, this is the biggest part of Reagan's legacy - spend as much as you want, no one will really give a sh*t about the national debt.

Of course, they did cut some spending on a token basis this budget season. When they get serious and look at farm subsidies, this silly prescription drug boondoggle, and other serious wastes, I'll probably be dead.

This is the most sensible--if sad--thing I've read here lately...

Precisely why forcing the majority of the population to pay more of the burden would cause spending to decrease. People would vote with their pocketbooks if it were actually THEIR pocketbook.

When you factor in ALL taxation, the poor/middleclass are already spending a good deal on taxes. Sales, indirectly by rent on property, and so on. I'm not sure that taxing them into eating Alpo while Geo Bush buys another mountainbike with their savings will be more enlightening. [?]

Do you think that lobbyists would care that the middleclass is paying more of a %age of their income to support the programs that they don't want cut?

RE: Hatch: The Survivor/Tax Evader

By the way, I just saw on Yahoo that Hatch was found guilty of the tax evasion.

Looks like a fairly long prison sentence - I smell a new reality show! [;)]

Looks like Hatch gets to play house with "Bubba". Not that he would mind, anyway!

They're not paying enough. There is a disportionate tax burden on the higher income brackets.
Kill progressive and regressive taxation.
