RE: Parents sue so they don't have to take responsibility

If you were a child in the 40's, 50's or 60's, looking back it is hard to believe we have lived as long as we have...

As children we rode in cars without seat belts or airbags. Riding in the back of a ute on a warm day was a special treat. Our cots were covered in brightly coloured lead based paint.

We had no child-proof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cupboards and rode our
bikes without helmets.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle...horrors!

We spent hours building go-carts out of scraps, then rode down the hill only to
find out that we forgot the brakes. After careering off into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on it was OK. No mobile phones, no one able to reach
us all day...unthinkable!.

We broke bones and broke teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these
accidents. No one was to blame but us.

We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get
over it.

We ate cakes and bread and butter, and drank cordial, but we were never
overweight. We shared one drink with four friends from one bottle and no one died from this.

We had no Playstations, Nintendo, Xboxe or Video games, tape movies with
surround sound, personal mobile phones or Chat rooms. We had friends. We
rode a bike or walked to a friends home, knocked on the door, and walked in and
talked to them.

Just imagine ...by ourselves..out there in the cold cruel world without a
guardian. How did we do it?

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and barrel hoops and tho' we
were told it would happen, did not poke out many eyes.

Footy and netball had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment ...and not seek psychiatric
counselling.

Some students were not as smart as others so they failed a grade and were held
back to repeat the same grade. Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected, there was no one to hide
behind.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They
actually sided with the law. ..imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and
inventors, ever. The past 50 years has seen an explosion of innovation and new
ideas. We have had freedom, failure, successand responsibility and we learned to
deal with it all.

And you are one of them. Congratulations!

Im not a baby boomer, im 25, but i certainly respect the ways they did things. You might say i embellished the above points as something to remember, endure and respect. What do you think?

They say toilet flushes the other way down under but I had no idea people get younger as well.

Perhaps I shall move down there when I feel that I need to regain youth long gone [:o)]

I would be in support of her position if she was organizing a boycott. But suing so your kiddies don't see a commercial and pressure you to purchase a product when you are too weak to say no is not acceptable.
Back on topic, I am bewildered about this particular parent's reaction.

As with 430 I am also for boycott movement but taking the matter to court?

As long as we live in this modern world, escaping from influences of media, peers and the Joneses are inevitable unless a family decides to set up a compound surrounded by chain linked fence in Idaho.

It is up to parents to control the influences upon their children, but this particular parent is pinning the blame on others, while she skirts her responsibilities.

If one does not like to be bombarded with advertisements, one of the ways to circumvent them is to subscribe to premium channels for a fee and skip the commercials. There are other kids programming available on cable that buys programs from Nickjr and airs them w/o commercials (Noggin for example). Just as there are many products to be sold and advertised, there many options from which a consumer can choose. It is up to the consumers to decide from a pool of products which particular item is most suitable. In fact, this parent is paradoxically weakening the power of consumer - she has forfeited her rights and responsibility as a consumer by not excercising the right to choose but instead she sues the corporation.

What worries me most is what becomes of her kids when they grow up? Just more of those who cannot accept their own responsibility and are quick to blame others?
