If China democratizes, they can do it. Otherwise I just don't see it happening. Too much brain-drain. Under Communism they will always be nothing more than the world's slave labor shop. I say the solution is to beat them at their own game. The only thing that will work cheaper than a Chinese is a robot. We should be roboticizing all our industries. Whatever it takes - tax credits to outright coercion, it needs to happen if we are to survive.
If there is success in raising the minimum wage to the levels some politicians talk about you wont need incentives to get robots out there. Won't be too long till you go to McDonalds and the whole operation is automated. Don't think it will happen? Go ask your local elevator operator.
Sounds good. Then entry level jobs will be technicians, and fixing machines requires knowledge and training. They will be paid better -- better jobs are good for the country, not more burger-flippers.
You give too many people too much credit. There is a certain percentage of the population that is barely intelligent enough to work at McDonalds. No way these people could read a manual to repair the machines let alone actually repair them.
I absolutely agree, but it brings up the question, what are we going to do with these people? The answer is we have to change our whole model of what a society is. We have to roboticize, and educate the population. The problem is we are also creating an enormous population of unskilled workers - the children of today's Mexican illegals, who will be legal US citizens. It's going to be a powder keg.
That is a very untrue assumption. Every one of my Mexican employees children have succeded in school, and many have gone on to college and a professional career. The mothers are doting to a fault and they don't bullshit when it comes to education. Believe it or not regardless of their status, they understand the amazing advantages they have here and do not take it for granted like many of our kids.
