What about the trillions in transition costs? Who pays those?
What will we do with the millions that come in from illegals? Gov't keeps that?
Who then picks up the pieces from those who bet the ranch on wild stock pics that flounder? How does that get factored into the costs of privitization? I'm all for personal responsibility, but I also don't think that anyone should die old of starvation because they bet on the new Enron, or a mutual fund that played fast and loose with their funds.
My opinion is that it's too trusted a safety net to monkey around with. I've never viewed it as a retirement plan anyway. As far as it going bankrupt, if you move up the retirement age a couple of years - problem solved. And these fogies will die eventually, so the balance will be restored to a more healthy level down the road.
Of course, if all this fails, I'm OK with a Logan's Run scenario, with the cutoff around 65.
