50 Million Officially Disabled

This is totally news to me. I knew that disability had become a big business in the US but I hadn't a clue it had gotten this big. More than one out of six people now.

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html

I'm sorry to say that I know several people who are collecting disability payments/settlements and I don't think a single one of them deserves it.

But then I'm a curmudgeon. But then you knew that.

RE: 50 Million Officially Disabled

To minimize suspense, I'll share what a friend of mine wrote:

"Yep - half of them are alcoholics and the other half are children with "autism spectrum disorder". If you read the descriptors for that, it's the easiest one of ALL to qualify under. And then mom gets money as the full-time care-giver plus the kid's/kids' checks"

I doubt anyone's surprised at the sweet, forgiving nature of my friends..

RE: 50 Million Officially Disabled

Don't know what the figure are for the UK but I expect a lot of people claim disability because they need it.
Family tax benefits however annoy me. I don't see why us tax payers should pay for other peoples kids. They should have thought about the financial side before hand. It's an advertisement for people to have three or four kids by the time they're 18 and just live off benefits.

RE: 50 Million Officially Disabled

Everything is considered a disability these days and it seems that everyone wants a handout from the government.
