Part of the reason they pulled the 928 was that it overheated unless you were driving at 80+ mph. A friend has one and this car is a bitch in traffic. On the open road however, its one of the finest cars I've ever had the pleasure to ride in.
You are right. These cars were made purely for the Autobahn.
(Although the later models mostly didn't have these problems anymore)

Don't forgot its starring role in "Weird Science" along side the Mondial.

The 928 is still one of my favorite Porsche's and YES they should have kept the sweet round teardrop popup lights. Its a signature.

The new 928 looks suspiciously like a Mercedes SLR McLaren. Stubby back end, relatively long front end. Anyone else see the similarities?

I think you have that backwards. Matteus is right, the 928 is the best regular production model porsche ever made, which excludes the cgt.

The back of this prototype photo is very much like the back of many of our 928's as is the low, wide stance and long snout. We (928 folks) like these photo's. And yes the old frog eye headlights are unique and a cool fun part of the 928.

The 928 was made with the autobahn in mind and is not fond of slow traffic but can deal with it easy enough. If you are ever offered the chance to take a ride in one, accept it, you will not regret it. 928 owners are a friendly bunch and like to share our secret. The 928 was also the priciest model. Weird science was cool.

hmm remind me again wasnt the 928 the cheapest model you can get?
The 914 (mostly audi parts) became the 924, which in turn became the 944, which became the 968, which were all inline 4 cylinders,... the 928 was initially a 4.5 litre V8 and when it died it was a 5.4 Litre V8. by no means cheap, unlike the 914, 924 & 944
