Hemi Madness

I watched some huge custom car auction on the Speed channel last night.
A factory 1968 Dodge Dart with dual quads (1 of only 80 made) went for $192,000. [:0]

ThrillKill,

I wouldn't waste my money on that crap in my opinion.

Well everyone has their dream vehicle.

I would rather own and keep my Mercedes G-Cabrio.

Do you intentionally prey on my OCD? I need you to get a bucket, fill it full of warm soapy water, take a nice clean lambswool covered sponge and go wash your front wheels before I jump off a roof. [^]

RE: Hemi Madness

No idea why someone would pay that amount for something that handles terrible and has weak brakes. Sure it may "go real quick" and "sound real loud" but anything can do that - but these sure really don't go fast.

The real test is to go like hell in relative silence, safety and comfort.

There's something to be said about going 100 mph and not even being able to tell it bar the spedo.

Ultimate muscle car was the 300SEL 6.3. That thing could out accelerate and outrun a Corvette or it's time.

That Hemi thing with Chrysler has always been overrated and it's really their only selling point.

They didn't have it for years, and their quality was slipping again and their sales were down, so what do they do? Put a bunch of hemi's on a bunch of vehicles.

Chryler's marketing scheme seems to be that of nostalgia now-a-days. PT Cruiser, Hemi's, 300's "mob styling". Also nostalgic is the MB hand-me-downs it's getting.

What I find funny is that the redline on my 560SEL is still 200 rpm more than that of a 300C Hemi and looks more likely to have a wealthy criminal with a very busy yet hidden agenda on it.

Excuse me if I'm stating the obvious, but I don't think that the buyer/investor plans to drive that car much.

Obviously...

RE: Hemi Madness

Yeah, obviously...

But in some's opinion, and mine included, more than half of the enjoyment of onwing a classic car is being able to drive it and show it off.

"Yeah guys, come with me to my climate controlled warehouse to see my car for show only"

I guess if you have the money to do that kind of thing.

It's just muscle cars all seem to look the same and seem overly repetitive.

I guess that's why I'm at this forum and own the cars that I do and I'm not at another forum....obviously heh

excuse me?

chrysler was doing better without mercedes.

they had released a slew of VERY popular and forward cars right prior to the merge. the neon was selling in large volumes(and if they would have kept advertising, it would have beaten the civic/carollas of its day) the intrepid could be seen almost as much as the taurus(the best selling taurus-- not the turd one) we'll forget about the jan brady model cloud cars, theyre very forgettable.

the viper was a success. the ram truck has inspired the styling of ALL trucks since its big fenders debuted in 1994.

chrysler was doing well for itself in 1995-1998(or whenever the merge was) i cannot say the same for mercedes.

just because it has a star on it, doesnt make it a good car.

rotting spring perches(w210) bad head gaskets(everything with a 3.2v6) bad wiring harnesses(again...3.2v6) the m class(needs no mention-- bad introduction all around-- pre chrysler, i might add) what about the legendary diesel engines found in mercedes cars in 1991-1995, huh?

yeah-- engeneering excellence.

you just keep stroking off looking at that star, dude.

as for me-- ill take a car of real quality over one with perceived quality any day.

RE: Hemi Madness

Your're preaching to the converted as far as modern MB is concerned.

The hand me downs I am talking about is the Crossfire that's a restyled previous gen SLK and the 300 that has tonnes of E underpinnings and other components.

In my post there was nothing about the union being benficial to anyone only that Chysler was getting hand-me-downs.

Stop putting words in my mouth.

RE: Hemi Madness

no no--

i kinda like the crossfire. the car is more mercedes than the modern slk heh heh.

the b class tourer is surely a chrysler/mitsu product. the chrysler inspited this car, and is very popular-- i can see it, dodges new baby wagon, the pt and b class all sharing parts. itll happen.

the r class tourer is well... i havent seen two 'different' cars look so much alike as when chrysler, plymouth and dodge were all selling neons... heh heh

i wasnt offended, i just go into rant mode as soon as someone mentions these companies together in a bad tone. i also didnt mean to spout off *at* you

so... handshakes an a round of drinks and all that good stuff.

to answer the original post:

-- the hemi is cool because its ALWAYS been cool to have a loud, fast car that uses more fuel than two smooth, strong highway cruisers.

dads first car was a 70 model mach 1-- those werent terribly great, but people LOVE them.

some het guy put it best: cars are like women, itd be really bad if we all wanted the same one.

the one i didnt like was that mercury custom that was the same inside and out, all fire engine red. it made me want to vomit.
