It should hardly be a revelation that college profs, most of whom are active researchers, should be liberal-minded. They are by profession interested in questioning every aspect of the status quo. I mean, what kind of research is it that wishes always to uphold the current paradigm?

Being smarter than the average bear doesn't necessarily confer wisdom. The image of the absent-minded prof unconcerned or naive about worldly events is pretty darned accurate in most cases. But of course, not in every case.

If you look at the history of the world I submit more misery has been caused by geniuses than by dolts.

Dolts of the world unite!

Nothing I like better than an argument for intellectual mediocrity. Let us all strive for the mean, those who stand out shall be hammered down.

Don't be silly. Or don't act silly. Aw hell, don't do either.

I sure as heck don't advocate for intellectual mediocrity. But I think there is way more to life then being an aighead. For example, if you lined-up the smart politicians on one side and the not so smart ones on the other, I'll bet we'd find greater security to the nation among the not so smart ones.

Think of the presidents over the previous half-century. Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Bush I, Clinton were generally considered very bright boys. Think of the not so smart ones: Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, Bush II generally considered dim bulbs.

How would you say the two sides stack-up as far against each other?

Where'd you get this data?

I don't think Johnson or Nixon were terribly bright. Cunning maybe but not terribly bright.

And I don't agree that Eisenhower was a dolt.

Of course you're arguing for intellectual mediocrity, "smart isn't important" is exactly that. As for your "smart v. dim" list, I'd take any one off the smart list over any one on the "dim" list. Yes, including Carter over Reagan, both of whom, IMO, were recipients of reputations that were undeserved by virtue of being in office at the right/wrong time.

Where'd I get it? Heck, I made it up.

What would your guess be as far as intelligence is concerned. Try removing their pecadilloes from your judgement. Nixon being a crook didn't make him stupid, nor did Clinton's BJ. For example.

RE: Political Bias at 32 Elite Colleges and Universities

This should probably be a new thread.

From your selective list, I'd say that Kennedy, Carter, and Bush I were the smartest. I never thought Clinton was a genius, although he certainly had shrewd political judgment.

But there are many kinds of intelligence.
What's the topic here again?
