London, England (AHN) - Researchers in Scotland will attempt to answer a question that has stymied men for years: "Does my butt look big in this outfit?"
The team from the School of Textiles and Design at Heriot-Watt University will attempt what may be the first scientific study into how the appearance of a woman's rear is affected by clothing, reports The Independent.
The backsides of hundreds of women wearing a variety of clothing types will be photographed. Study volunteers will then look at the pictures and decide how big or small each woman's bottom appears.
The study seeks to determine how different colors, designs, patterns or fabric types alter a person's perception of size.
The researchers believe the study could have major implications for retailers.
"There's much discussion in the media of clothing styles that flatter the body and it's generally accepted that enhancing body perception can improve confidence and self-esteem. But the factors behind this have never been fully investigated in a proper scientific manner," says Dr. Lisa Macintyre, who is leading the research.
She adds, "This study will provide for the first time detailed and usable information that would enable designers to make the clothes that help women make the most of their natural assets."
