London: Disgraced singer Gary Glitter will apparently go to any lengths to avoid jail time, and has reportedly even tried to bribe corrupt Vietnamese officials to help him escape before his trial.

The singer, who is accused of sexually abusing two underage Vietnamese girls, faces twelve years in a Vietnamese jail if he is found guilty of the charges.

And, according to British tabloid The Sun, he is also offering underworld figures 60,000 pounds if they help him escape.

A source said that British government officials in Vietnam learned of Glitter's plot to use his considerable wealth as a means to escape, after being alerted by four separate informers.

They were also informed that one officer at grim Phuoc Co jail had already accepted 290 pounds from the singer for advice on how to beat the justice system.

“Despite the most serious charges being dropped, Glitter is terrified he will spend years behind bars in appalling conditions. He does not want to face it. He sees his wealth as a way to pay his way out of jail in a very poor and corrupt country just as it helped him pay off the families of his victims, the paper quoted the source, as saying.

The insider further revealed that the pop-pervert had offered between 50,000 to 100,000 US dollars to aide in his escape.

“We know he has instructed people acting on his behalf to pay between 50,000 and 100,000 US dollars to anyone who helps him successfully escape custody in Vietnam. They are talking to local criminals who can help, and in a poverty-stricken country where money talks such things are highly achievable, the source said.

The source added that if the singer, who has often complained about the appalling conditions of the jail, did manage to escape and was caught, he faced the risk of being shot down.

“Whenever he has been visited by consular staff he has complained about conditions like the toilets, the food and access to telephones. He doesn't think he could stand that for years and has plans to ensure it doesn't happen. Jailbreak is a preferable alternative. Of course, if Glitter went on the run and was tracked down he always risks being shot. If he wants to take that risk, there are plenty who will be hoping for that outcome, he said.
