bombing at Ohio mosque
CHICAGO (AFP) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating a bombing at an Ohio mosque which caused minor damage but no injuries.
"There were two explosive devices that went off pretty much simultaneously at two separate buildings -- the mosque and the administrative building," said Michael Brooks, a special agent for the FBI.
Both buildings were empty when the bombs went off at about 10:15 pm Tuesday (0315 GMT Wednesday). Evening prayers had ended about two hours earlier.
The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime, Brooks said.
It sent shockwaves through the region's Muslim community, said Adnan Mirza, the director of the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
"This pretty much happened out of the blue," Mirza said, explaining that the community had not received any threats prior to the bombing in Cincinnati.
"We're hoping it's an isolated incident."
Ohio is home to about 180,000 Muslims from a wide range of backgrounds, Mirza said. There is a large Somali community in Columbus and there are also a number of Muslims of African, South Asian and Arab descent scattered across the Midwestern state.
The last serious hate crime against Muslims in Ohio occurred in 2002, Mirza said, when vandals broke into a mosque, desecrated Korans and left the taps on in the bathrooms in order to flood the building.
