Those diagonal tri-color racing stripes!
What a blast from past!
Anyone remember making one of these?
In the dream cars when you were 16, I referenced the above picture. Ironically, the car pictured here was driven by one of my favorite F1 drivers of the time, Didier Pironi, french driver who died in a speed boat accident. The M1's like the one pictured were featured in pro car races before the F1 race at some events. We used to go to Monaco every year, it was really fun. The F1 drivers would drive identical equipment, all M1s, I was always seating at the Gozogène, since renamed, and it was fun to see the guys lift the rear inside wheels in the turn before the traight away!
Lauda was uninspired, but of a mechanical precision. This wheels, in F1, would very rarely deviate from the ideal trajectory in the curves, unless he was preparing for a pass, or blocking. One year, he was blocking D. Pironi, for laps (Lauda was blocking for Jodi Schekter I think it was, because he was to get a Ferrari drive the year after). Pironi got pissed, got his front left on Lauda's right rear, and flew off and landed on Lauda. Lauda knew why it had happened, and did not peep!
Pironi once drive the whole Monaco GP with a broken transmission, he had to keep his right hand on the shifter all race long, and there are many gear changes at Monaco!
The M! procars did not last too too long, the sponsors of the F1 cars where unhappy because the drivers would eventually suffer injuries, however minor as a luxed wrist, and prevent them from giving it all on Sunday's big race.
