When I took photography, the instructor told all the students to get a fully manual camera, cameras with full manual override or risk ceding the hard-earned spot to the next one on the waiting list.
It's similar with cars I suppose. Learn to understand the elements of driving before moving on to gadgetry.
I don't rely on that many automatic driving aid except for transmission. I've driven automatic for 98% of my driving. With the 560SEL, I like the fact that I have to do basically everything (even the blinkers have to be turned off manually, the cancellation mechanism has given up long time ago). It makes me feel I am in touch with the car as opposed to some other 'brain' doing the driving for me.
As I count tailgaters as one of the worst offenders, I am particularly wary of adaptive cruise control. Before long, we will have novice drivers who has learnt to rely on this technology and has no idea how much room to give at certain speeds and driving conditions once he is off the 'cheat code'.
