RE: Tookie execution update (Clemency)
I'm not settled on how I feel about this and again, I realize you're 14 and have much living and learning to do, but read up on it before you form an opinion so easily. Williams claims -- as do most murder defendants -- that he did not commit the murders for which he was tried and convicted. He has always steadfastly maintained his innocence, even after gaining some notoriety. There were in fact irregularities in his trial, so it is perhaps not as cut and dry as you'd maybe like to believe. There is a possiblity he was wrongly convicted.
Now of course you know (if you've read my other OT posts) that I'm not a bleeding-heart liberal; in these kinds of cases I'm generally an eye-for-an-eye, tooth-for-a-tooth kind of guy. And anyone can change, but that's not grounds to commute their death sentence -- at least IMHO. But if we assume as true -- for the sake of argument -- the claims that Tookie has rehabbed and has in fact written childrens' books that have in fact moved some kids away from gangs, then I see the other side's argument a little more clearly. He can do a lot of good (and the profits from his books will continue to fund projects against gangs and their violence) if he's commuted to a life sentence.
In the end I could go either way. If he's granted clemency I won't have a fit and if his veins are turned to cheese mush I won't be too upset either.
FWIW, I am utterly disgusted with the yahoos out there waving the race card, intimating that Williams is being executed because he's black. Yeah, be convicted of killing four people in cold blood and be white, or asian, or slavic, we'll ignore it. Sheesh. Some people will make any argument to reach the conclusion they want, no matter how ludicrous.
Ahem. Now let me put away my soap box.[:D][:D][:D]
