^^^^^^

Well people rave about the Focus over here but I'm not sure if they are identical to the models sold in the USA.My guess would be that they have different engines, transmissions and suspension systems tailored to your market. If individuality is not a priority for your sis, then I expect she would find the Focus a safe and competant drive.
Incidently,my twins have just learned to drive in a Focus and they preferred that to their mother's nasty Renault, but that's not saying much.

well, am pretty sure the wheel is on the wrong side too.. [:p]

RE: Chevy cobalt or Ford Focus

Get the 06 Civic, or even better, the new Si.

Great car, already winning awards, cheap, and will run forever.

The Focus has had a huge amount of recalls, and though the Cobalt is getting pretty decent reviews, it's still a rental car waiting to happen.

Corollas are now overpriced, and sadly as exciting as the Cobalt (excepting the SS, which is a pretty decent car, if you can avoid looking at the outside when you're getting into it).

Of course, then there's the Cooper S, too. She could win autoxes on weekends. [:)]

2002 Ccoupe, not as good as others, apparently

I drove a focus once, never again....never again. I had a Pontiac Sunfire for several years. Ran great, good on gas. Never had a problem with it.

I'll side with ineon on this one.

If you add it to the mix I'd go with a Neon. They're all just basic transportation cars but the Neon does seem to offer a little more for the dollar. And that's coming from someone who can't stand Dodge/Chrysler products (other than the German ones, that is.[:)]).

What about the Saturn Ion? I drove one of those and thought it was a pretty good car, more inspiring to drive than the cobalt/focus.

RE: Chevy cobalt or Ford Focus

greg-- leon and i thank you for the vote[:)]

you must be a small person, a very small person to have recommended a saturn ion.

i rode in one and held on for dear life the entire time. this was with a 50 year old woman at the wheel, she didnt drive badly, the car was just as wide as two people and a stack of half a dozan cds between them and most importantly, it FEELS LIKE IT TOO. the steering wheel is too small, the dash is an amalgamation of all types of bad tastes combined and i didnt have to pull too hard to remove the gauge cluster to show her how cheaply built it was either!

ion/cobalt/sunfire should be fairly reliable, but the big problem is... as someone said it before.

the problem with the ion/cobalt/sunfire isnt so much the drivetrane, its that its surrounded by a shitty gm car. same goes for the fuck..err focus(had to) my sisters ford taurus sel(ie:two steps up) is smaller than my 240 and is absolutely falling to pieces at 110k. steer clear of ford.

chrysler automobiles have shown to hold resale better than gm/ford as well. i looked up the book value of my leon(retail-- theys not making profit if i trade dammit) 4 grand still. after 8.25 years! makes the car cost 1000 dollars a year in depreciation, not too too bad.

my final say on the matter is thus:

when the neon was head of the pack, it only lagged behind the civic si in road tests. add to the mix that the si civic cost 19 grand and the neon 13,750...

clearly a winner for me, let alone the giant back seat as compared to all the others from 1995-1999

This signature removed to protect the innocent.

RE: Chevy cobalt or Ford Focus

Ineon, I drove a regular Ion and a Redline (certainly the latter was lots more fun to drive, but a harsher ride). I'm 6' and carrying a few extra pounds on a fairly large frame; I had my niece with me who is 5'11" and normal-sized and we didn't notice that it seemed particularly small. It was smaller than the neon but it didn't seem that dramatic. And it's quite a bit cheaper than the Cocus or the Fobalt.

That said, my strongest memories of the Ion were a smooth, precise shifter and a clutch that was very easy to modulate.

All of these cars are smaller than I would choose to own (particularly if it would be my only car) as I like being able to transport friends and family in comfort and safety -- which is why I bought an E.

If you're stuck buying a subcompact and you have to have new, but can't stand imports, your options are very, very limited. Peter, convince your sister to take a more global view. Get her hands on a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic -- she'll never let go. [:)]
