Torture Victim "Invented" Iraq-Al Qaeda Link

December 9, 2005
Qaeda-Iraq Link U.S. Cited Is Tied to Coercion Claim
By DOUGLAS JEHL (NYT)

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 - The Bush administration based a crucial prewar assertion about ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda on detailed statements made by a prisoner while in Egyptian custody who later said he had fabricated them to escape harsh treatment, according to current and former government officials.

The officials said the captive, Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, provided his most specific and elaborate accounts about ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda only after he was secretly handed over to Egypt by the United States in January 2002, in a process known as rendition.

The new disclosure provides the first public evidence that bad intelligence on Iraq may have resulted partly from the administration's heavy reliance on third countries to carry out interrogations of Qaeda members and others detained as part of American counterterrorism efforts. The Bush administration used Mr. Libi's accounts as the basis for its prewar claims, now discredited, that ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda included training in explosives and chemical weapons....

You mean alleged torture victim. Mr Libi (sounds like a libby to me) claims to have been tortured while in Egyptian custody. A claim flatly denied by Egyptian officials.

That prisoners and terrorists are liars is not unusual. I find it rookie-esque to have relied on a prisoner's word as reason for war.....if that's what happened.

The NY times has a shady track record as far as I'm concerned, so who knows when they are being accurate and when they are disseminating propaganda?

Same goes for our leaders, unfortunately.

So what newspaper do you find to offer the most comprehensive, dependable, and intelligent reporting?

I don't know of a news source that doesn't "take liberties" anymore. There used to be some smaller locally owned papers I could trust, but they have been swallowed up by the predators and must all carry the water.

Our leaders have been liars for centuries, my friend.

That is why I come here, under the shade of anonymity, to engage and discuss issues with actual likely voters. We can parse the news from the various sources together and distill them to as close to fact as possible.......certainly better that the professional outlets.

While we are most likely of opposite political perspectives, I enjoy your opinions. This is how politics was meant to be played out.......

What is the definition of "extraordinary rendition"?

I'd still like to know what your favorite sources are, FWIW.
I like "The Independent" of London.
