Airline Passenger Who Made Threat Killed
By JOHN PAIN, Associated Press Writer

MIAMI - A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that had arrived from Colombia, officials said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead passenger was a 44-year-old U.S. citizen.

It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at a passenger or suspect, he said. A witness said that the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 and that a woman with him said he was mentally ill.

The passenger, who indicated there was a bomb in the bag, was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said.

The marshals pursued and ordered the passenger to get on the ground, but the man did not comply and was shot when apparently reaching into the bag, Doyle said. Authorities did not immediately say whether any bomb was found.

Passenger Mary Gardner told WTVJ in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!"

Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar and had not had his medication.

The plane, Flight 924, had arrived from Medellin, Colombia, at 12:16 p.m. and was scheduled to depart two hours later for Orlando, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said.

"I don't know yet if the passenger had been on the plane and was getting off, or was starting to board the aircraft," he said.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m., suggesting passengers may have already been preparing to depart, he said. About 105 passengers scheduled to fly to Orlando, he said.

Martin Gonzalez, spokesman for Colombia's civil aviation agency, said the flight "left normally with no problems."

There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, though the exact number is classified.

Umm...what would you have done? The guy says he has a bomb in the bag, he's running, you tell him to stop and he makes like he's reaching into the bag. I can't imagine I'd have thought twice had I been the air marshal. And particularly if I happened to hear he was a mental patient; you wouldn't think a sane person would be running around on a 757 claiming to have a bomb. I'm sorry the guy's dead and his widow has my sympathy, but no way would I second guess the air marshal on these facts.

Sounds like the guy did the right thing. Guy acts frantic, won't stop, and says he has a bomb. Its a shame but he's going to get shot. This sounds like a far cry from the London Bobbies shooting that Brazilian guy in the head.

Mental patients who don't take their meds are just plain crazy. My 2 cents.

And crazy is scary at 36,000 feet. Sucks to be the shooter, but shit happens.

Well gee Wally, here's a simple lesson we can all learn. If you're in an airport and LE has a gun on you and tells you to freeze, it might behoove you to shut the fuck up and freeze.

Don't know if I told the story about being piss drunk in Shannon airport at 3 in the morning. Just me and some bartenders when all of a sudden about 140 people, most wearing turbans came filing into the airport terminal. There was a flight from Canada to Scotland or somewhere with a bunch of Sikhs on it and some hot head said he had a bomb when they wouldn't give him another bag of roasted almonds or something. You don't know what drunken confusion is until you witness a scene like that.

Not really what I would have expected out of a bunch of Sikhs. But maybe they are tired of being accused of being tangos.

The guy who was shot got what he asked for. I hate it for the shooter but put yourself in his shoes. What if the guy really had a bomb and killed xx number of people because you hesitated.
