Imagine if it were in East LA, and the shooter were LAPD instead of a US Marshall. Nutcase or not, the public would have the Chief's badge within 6 months.

Face it folks. They've won. We've let fear get in the way of our humanity.

All hail the Sixteen Men of Tain!

They won a while ago. Our invasion of Iraq and passage of the Patriot Act were all the evidence I needed.

RE: 1st killing by an Air Marshal post 9/11

You got a plane load of people, you got some guy saying he has a bomb, and a world where such things as people throwing a bomb at a plane are tragically possible. Even a small grenade can cause a plane to ignite into a fireball that could kill hundreds. So there is the air marshal's choice - take a chance let the nut live, or whack the guy to prevent the possibility that hundreds might die. The air marshals really had no choice.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

The shooting appears justified. The benefits of the many far exceeded the benefit of the one.

Looking at the graphics, there were TWO AMs aboard.
Both of them engaged the guy. Training kicks in...

Whew... I would have been pissing my pants if I had been aboard as a pax and seen this go down....
and wishing I hadn't had to leave the Glock at home as I threw myself over my wife......

in this era you can't shout "I have a bomb"
The whole incident is too bad, but if he really did have a bomb, then everyone would be blaming the marshalls for not shooting him. They were just doing their job and had no way of knowing if the guy was lying.
