RE: Report: Bush talked of bombing Al-Jazeera

Check out Al-Jazeera sometime. Sure, the "slant" is often different from the U.S. media, but it's remarkably sensible and not sensationalistic. I was surprised myself. http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage

Not quite what your government would have you believe.
Is anyone surprised by that?

Have you really bought into this, in some misguided sense of fair play and understanding? Why not just cut your own throat and be done with it. Al-Jazeera carries ridiculously one-sided apologies for murder and mayhem. Take for example this nice piece on how racist and evil the French are, and how they have victimised these poor immigrants:

That's an editorial from a research fellow at University College London (note the disclaimer attached: "The opinions expressed here are the author's and do not necessarily reflect the editorial position or have the endorsement of Aljazeera.") and what's more it's hardly radical. I've read far more incendiary tracts in the U.S. press.

Amusingly, however, it's in the *right-wing* U.S. press that I have seen that researcher's jeremiad against entrenched French inequalities most comprehensively supported. There was--and remains--a tremendous amount of unfortunate schadenfreude in the U.S. right-wing media concerning the recent upheavals in France.

I wonder if you actually read (or understood) the article whose link you posted. Opening your eyes to the world outside your own prejudices need not entail cutting your own throat. Quite the contrary, in fact.

The schadenfreude expressed by sections of the US media regarding France is an irrelevant diversion. The issue at hand is the one-size-fits-all model of tolerance we in the west apply to everyone and everything, even those expressing the most morally indefensible and inhuman attitudes. This is exemplified by your encouragement for others to use Al-Jazeera as a source of 'remarkably sensible' journalism. As far as your personal remarks go, you have no idea what I may or may not know or understand, which again is not the issue; suffice to say that I am familiar with the viewpoint expressed in that particular and similar articles (and the argument from authority cuts no ice, btw) and I'm happy to debate this issue with you. In my view, the ethical slack given to minorities and other cultures based solely on the fact that they are minorities and other cultures, irrespective of sedition, pernicious lies and anti-human sophistry generated by their spokesmen has to stop; it is wrong. Cowardly political correctness generated 'respect' for evil ideas simply becuase they come from groups playing the victimhood or racism card is wrong. Buying into Al-Jareera is not being open-minded and tolerant, it is self-indulgent intellectual posturing. But then I forget; postmodern deconstruction analysis reveals that all cultures and ideas are equal in any sense you care to choose, there is no right and wrong, there are only the prejudices of the reader, and every belief has equal validity.

RE: Report: Bush talked of bombing Al-Jazeera

Actually, the "issue at hand" is the characteristic Bush Administration response to dissent (or even inconvenient information): crush it at all costs.

Your remarks concerning tolerance would be amusing if a thoroughgoing--maybe even studied--ignorance did not underlie current U.S. policies in the larger world. Unfortunately, understanding precedes tolerance and no trend toward understanding may be perceived in U.S. foreign-policy discourse.

One doesn't "buy into" Al-Jazeera just because one reads it any more than one "buys into" any other news source. Al-Jazeera is "remarkably" sensible simply in the context of U.S. propaganda which maintains--as you do--that it's full of "evil ideas". You've yet to demonstrate a single one.

This is why the Bush Administration would rather bomb its opponents (real or imagined) than debate them in any forum of ideas. The military forces of the U.S. remain generally overwhelming, unlike its once-vaunted moral authority. That should make you as sad as it does me.
