RE: Should the US withdraw immediately from Iraq?
Murtha's logic is pretty simple - staying there serves no purpose. We have become the target, and the reason for the violence in Iraq. As long as we are there, the longer it will continue. No matter what we do, Iraq will fracture into three states. The best thing to do is redeploy to friendly areas in the region, and let it happen. It's going to happen no matter what we do, so why should more of our men die, and more maimed come home shot to pieces. He's been over there, and this is the conclusion he has reached, and he has reached it based on what he sees as the best interests of the soldiers, versus the best interests of the GOP, the current criteria used by this administration.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
