OK, sorry for posting a completely off topic (non SLK thread) but I need help planning a fly drive honeymoon to California/Nevada in May.

We have the majority of the holiday and hotels booked but a little local knowledge to book some of the stop overs would be a really big help.

We're flying into San Francisco and staying there for a few days. I've then hired a Mustang Convertible to drive to the Sonoma/Nappa region for a couple of days relaxation before driving down to Los Angeles. With a couple of days allowed to get there. After a couple of days were then driving to Las Vegas. We're there for about 5 days and then flying home. Probably broke!

So which places would be nice to stay in Sonoma/Nappa and which are nice on the drive down from San Fran to LA. We're looking at Carmel/Monterey at the moment, but I have no clue whether they are nice or not.

Any other must see's would also be really appreciated.

thx

Check out this online CaLIFORNIA VISITORS GUIDE:

Carmel/Monterey is great and the road from there down to Big Sur is one of the most spectacular drives around if you have the time...I just need to caution you to look at the miles when planning....California is a big state...[;)]

BTW, one of my favorite places to stay is the ventana Inn in Big Sur:

Another vote for Ventana Inn. I also like Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/.

And then when you get to LA you might want to stay at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica http://www.shuttersonthebeach.com

Sigh......I miss California....it was 25 here this morning[V]

Carmel/Monterey are great to see. If you are driving a convertible, there is another great place to visit and that is Mendocinno where ocean meets the cliffs, and the ocean views are incredible. Got some very nice hotels down there and it is about 1.5 hours from Napa.

Well, you are always welcome to drop by and see my beautiful SLK if nothing more to see cause I am just next to the airport [:D][:D][:D]

You can also hire an SLK here for about $220 a day. Many other nice convertibles for hire but with mileage charge.

If you are driving alone highway 1 in Northern CAL, make sure that you don't fall asleep cause you may fall off the cliffs. I may run into you too since I cruise alone there all the time looking for fallen objects. [:D][:D]

My suggestion? Spend three days max in Las Vegas and spend the extra days along the California coastal cities. After three days Vegas just wears on you. The novelty wears off quickly. Besides the coast of California offers driving, sight seeing and dining experiences without equal anywhere in the world. IMHO....[:)]

Ah, places to see around here.

Go to Mount Tamalpais in Marine County when you go to Napa. The winding road up the mountain would make you wish you've brought along your SLK.

Go to Muir Wood to see the oldest redwood trees in the world.

Be sure to visit Coit Tower in SF, before it got blown up by terrorists. Crooked street and Mason street are nice to experience the hills in SF.

You can drive down to LA on Highway 1 then to 101 along the coast, a winding road that takes longer but it will be a blast to drive (again you would wish you bring the SLK along). Along the way, you can visit Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, Hearst Castle, Solvang (a complete Danish town), San Luis Bisbo, and Santa Barbara.

I must have skipped a few nice places, but you got the idea.

Sagey,

I think you will get a lot more responses in the Off Topic forum, ppl there are quick to reply and most of them are from California.
Isnt this an off-topic forum?

Forget Vegas, you'll be broke before you leave Sonoma. [:D]

It depends what 'floats your boat',but I would spend less time in Vegas and more cruising down route 101.All the places mentioned in the preceding responses are beautiful and romantic for a honeymoon and you will find great spots to eat and drink en-route.If you end up driving right down to Sta Monica, make sure you schedule to eat at 'Gladstone's 4 Fish',where Sunset blvd meets the ocean. It has a great atmosphere and the best Long Island Iced Teas I ever had.
Wishing you and your intended a great trip and a happy marriage.[:)]
