The Armistice ending WW I was signed at 11AM. The butcher's bill was so huge and the economic losses so great that people believed that the world would recoil in horror from ever again engaging in modern, industrial war.

Since then, millions more people have died in armed conflicts and through the use of science and industry dedicated to perfecting war machines, we have developed the ability to destroy civilization and pehaps, all life on Earth.

Yes, and at the heart of it all is the worship of militarianism and the desire to use military violence to solve political problems.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

Oh, is that what causes war? People have been wondering about that for millennia. I'm glad you finally brought your brilliant beacon of wisdom to this woe begotten world.

BTW, what is militarianism?

Because people did not want to remember the horror of WW1, they changed the name from "Armistice Day". The day has lost it's intended meaning now that it's all-inclusive.

Yep. And similarly with President's Day. Whadda loada chit. Who wants to celebrate Warren Harding, for goodness sake? Should've been left alone as Washington's Birthday.

Oh well, when the time comes, happy Millard Filmore Day.

I'll drink to that!

President's day? Was Washington's birthday the birthday to end all birthdays? Talk about a load of "chit".

Yeah, I'll bet Washington wouldn't have liked it--a State deification. Not that Washington was a man of humility, he was most certainly not. He wanted to be addressed as "Excellency" and made it stick. I think that honorific ended with Washington. I can't imagine Adams or Jefferson wanting it. Jackson would have. Probably TR, too. Others?
