How do you prepare for a potential disaster/emergency situation?
I happened to watch Suze Orman (who I usually think is an idiot who gives emotional-not financial advice) recently and it was a "special episode" related to being prepared for disaster/emergency situations. It made me think about just how un-prepared I would really be if there was a serious disaster where I needed to leave quickly.
A couple of the things she mentioned as being necessities:
* a few hundred dollars CASH
* a national bank account with a debit card.
* important documents (insurance, SS card, Bank/retirement account info, birth certificate). She recommends keeping them in a fire/water proof safe or lock box that you could take with you if needed.
* a list of important phone numbers (red cross, relatives, friends, local authorities)...I think a lot of us rely on our cell phones to store these numbers.
Those are the biggest things I took away from the program...she also discussed the importance of understanding your Homeowners/Flood/Rental insurance policies (duh).
I'm curious what some of you have done to prepare for events like this should something come up. I'm a firm believer in the Boy Scout Motto: "be prepared."
