RE: Louisiana survey
Here in Houston, we have pretty much closed all the shelters. There is still one downtown with a few hard cases left, but the vast majority of people have gone back to relatives in LA or to other cities. Believe it or not, most of the real suffering we hear about is in Miss - the rural folks there are still reeling from this. The place was utterly demolished. They have been promised trailers, and they never arrived, and have been living in tarp-covered ruins or tents. The LA guys have become down right celebrities - everyone wants to adopt one. The $2,000 checks, and the lavish gifts of aid have really changed a lot of their lives, sometimes for the worst.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
