Watched a drunk teenage boy die one night in my arms cause his car rolled over him. No belt on. Took ambulance 20 minutes to arrive. Too late. He was drunk to boot. Sad.
Death is a bitch. I think the most lasting impression I got was on a scuba diving trip. A guy in another party got shit faced and went diving, crawled back up on the beach with his lungs full of water as my dad and my brother and I were spreading out the picnic and swabbing up the hotdogs. Poor guy died despite the efforts of my dad and one of his buddies to save him, right there in front of us in the sand. I was about 11. It's one of those things that has happened in my life to make me see that alcohol is the most dangerous drug. Usually when you find suicide, violent accident or assault in the death situation, alcohol isn't that far behind. Bet if the guy had smoked a few doobies before his dive the worst he would have come back with would have been a bad appetite.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

... I (have) been so emotionally (afflicted) before that the tiniest whisper of that option invaded my senses...
I, as well, have felt this way. However, My Ex-wife cured me of that. I don't take life that seriously any more. She also taught me to NEVER become attached to a material item, "EVER". LOL

I ask this...What do you do to cope?

For me...Just a drink, a Martini, shaken, not stirred

RE: Another bad accident

Alcohol is a postponer, not a solution, to problems. It doesn't SOLVE anything, it only postpones the pain. That's why stopping drinking is so difficult - the stuff isn't really physically addictive the way smack is, but if one stops using it, the negative feelings one is anestisizing come back in an avalanche, causing the desire to resume medicating. You have to act on your daily problems, not postpone them - in other words, instead of drinking over your ex-wife, go on over to her house and beat the living shit out of her.

I'm NOT in denial. (cut to the chase). I don't take life so seriously any more. Besides I've come so far since then.

He's already offended several counties in free Ireland and if they knew what it was, surely they'd call for a Fatwa on his blasphemous soul.

azimuth is a golden girl[:)]

seriously, its the truth that everyone has thought about what everyone would be like if they were no longer here.

it just isnt something that i want to do to myself. i had an uncle who swallowed a shotgun because my aunt was such a heartless demanding bitch. she made his life a iving hell; she was suing a trick for child support for the youngest child "they" had. i can see being upset about it, i can even see beating the living snot out of her(in thought, at least) to show her how it feels.

but swallowing a shotgun?

i dont want to be found dead in an oldsmobile......yech

What do I do to cope? I keep myself busy. When I was emotionally stricken, I focused my attention on the events and my sentiments. It's healthful to do that to a point, but when it becomes obsessive, calamity lurks in the shadows.

Usually, the swell passes and the tide ebbs and flows normally again. Occasionally, I need the help of Mrs. Azimuth for the stregnth to let things pass.

I am not usually a conflicted soul, so my experience is limited. I've never had a drink nor have I taken drugs, so I can't say those substances would be helpful.

It appears that others on this thread have experienced more trauma than I, which brings to mind a though that has given me comfort over the years, "I'd rather have my problems than yours"

Except for the beating part (surely stated in jest) KV has better explained my POV on substances than I could. I have never involved myself in these behaviors because I know I would be addicted and unlike KV, don't have the strength to quit using.
