Democrats Force Senate Into Iraq Meeting

Something brewing..... Or just a lame attempt from Dems.
__________________________________________________ __

WASHINGTON - Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that President Bush used in the run-up to the war in Iraq and accusing Republicans of ignoring the issue.

"They have repeatedly chosen to protect the Republican administration rather than get to the bottom of what happened and why," Democratic leader Harry Reid said.

Taken by surprise, Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.

"The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," said Majority Leader Bill Frist. "They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas," the Republican leader said.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. The public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.

Reid's move shone a spotlight on the continuing controversy over intelligence that President Bush cited in the run-up to the war in Iraq. Despite prewar claims, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and some Democrats have accused the administration of manipulating the information that was in their possession.

Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was indicted last Friday in an investigation that touched on the war, the leak of the identity of a CIA official married to a critic of the administration's Iraq policy.

"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before invoking Senate rules that led to the closed session.

Libby resigned from his White House post after being indicted on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Democrats contend that the unmasking of Valerie Plame was retribution for her husband, Joseph Wilson, publicly challenging the Bush administration's contention that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Africa. That claim was part of the White House's justification for going to war.

Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record), R-Miss., said Reid was making "some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak."

A former majority leader, Lott said a closed session was appropriate for such overarching matters as impeachment and chemical weapons — the two topics that last sent the senators into such sessions.

In addition, Lott said, Reid's move violated the Senate's tradition of courtesy and consent. But there was nothing in Senate rules enabling Republicans to thwart Reid's effort.

As Reid spoke, Frist met in the back of the chamber with a half-dozen senior GOP senators, including Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas, who bore the brunt of Reid's criticism. Reid said Roberts reneged on a promise to fully investigate whether the administration exaggerated and manipulated intelligence leading up to the war.

Thanks, D.

RE: Democrats Force Senate Into Iraq Meeting

During the election, Bush and the GOP Senate promised there would be an "investigation" into the Iraq War. They wanted to divide their whitewash into two parts, the first being a "9-11 Investigation" and a second on how and what intelligence was used to justify the administrations now obviously false claims about Iraq. The Repigs conveniently scheduled the real investigation until after the election. Once the election was over, Sen Roberts, the head of the intelligence committee, quietly dropped the second investigation, hoping no one would notice. The Democrats are now demanding, in light of the fact that the Plame affair has shown the Bush Administration is essentially in the business of perjuring itself on a regular basis, that this investigation take place. The GOP's blood soaked war pigs know that if such an investigation ever took place, it would expose them for the lying, murderering, pieces of shit that they are, so they are going to fight it every step of the way. I'm glad they are, because investigation and outright impeachment of Bush and Cheney is about to become a serious campaign issue in the Congressional races. Recent polls have shown that up to 42% of the American people want to impeach Bush now, with a majority wanting him out if proof that he lied us into national disaster can be produced by the Senate. It is the Republican GOP Senate, which supposedly has the job of overseeing the executive branch, that is at the heart of this entire disgrace - they are cops on the take, pig fucks awash in corporate money, living it up while the Bush/Cheney Mob turn the United States Government into the equivalent of the Silician Mafia. The cure? Kick their asses out in 2006 so Bush can be impeached.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Like I said months ago. It would be damn funny for Bush to win the second term just so he can get his butt impeached. He should cut and run when he had the chance.

RE: Democrats Force Senate Into Iraq Meeting

The report was given to the senators in May and it was already planned to hear phase two next week. It's obvious the democrats are upset that the CIA leak investigation did not get Rove or Bush. The WMD investigation phase 1 shows 17-0 voted that there was no lying by the senate or the adminstration. They should be getting to buisness and if investigations are what they want then I have a few ideas. New Orlean government corruption, Sandy Burgular, Wilson outing his wife long ago and his lies about Niger, Clinton and Chinagate and plenty more.
